theme at “take a word” is raven or blackbird. i used a claw photo i shot last year, blended in an old postcard, the blackbird songquote is from a stamp of greenpepperpress, mailart style brushes are made by myself, grungy frame brushes from shadowhouse.

i started a new (well, another…) altered book, haven´t made one in a while… it is called “capolan” and dedicated to nick bantock´s mail art style. (if interested about the “capolan” term, read my previous post for a somewhat attempt of a clarification.) i know it is a bit odd to make “mail art” in a book, sounds like a contradiction… anyway, it will be an assembly of postal style pages. and i finally will use my recently custom made rubber stamps:)

i took a logarithm book for my base, as i just love numbers.

as the first entry is on a green dyed page, it qualifies for this week´s take-a- word challenge.

ich hab mal wieder ein neues (na ja: eigentlich altes;)) “altered book” gestartet, hab schon länger keins mehr gemacht… es soll “capolan” heißen und sich an nick bantock´s mail art stil anlehnen. (wer mehr darüber erfahren möchte, was “capolan” eigentlich ist, sollte meinen vorherigen post lesen.) – ich weiß, es ist eigentlich ein widerspruch, mail art in einem buch zu machen… aber egal, ich plane es als eine ansammlung von postalisch gestalteten seiten. und da sollen jetzt mal meine kürzlich selbst gemachten stempel zum einsatz kommen:)

als basis hab ich ein altes logarithmenbuch genommen, weil es so schön viele zahlen enthält. kann ich ja nicht genug davon kriegen;)

und weil der erste eintrag auf einer grün gefärbten seite ist, passt das dann auch gleich für die take-a-word herausforderung der woche.

what is “capolan”?

i know the art of nick bantock for a while now, but recently i bought this artbox (go to ebay or amazon), including 15 postcards, a souvenir stamp sheet and a 48-page booklet which gives a nice explantion about “capolan”. subtitle is “travels of a vagabond country” and i try to give a little summary here:
ich bin mit nick bantock´s kunst mittlerweile schon länger vertraut, aber vor kurzem hab ich mir diese artbox gekauft (gibts mit glück bei ebay, sonst amazon marketplace etc versuchen) – inhalt 15 postkarten, ein briefmarken-blatt und ein kleines taschenbuch, in dem auf 48 seiten der begriff “capolan” genauer beschrieben wird. untertitel ist “reisen eines vagabundierenden landes” und ich versuche hier mal eine kleine zusammenfassung zu geben:
n.b.´s fantasy land “capolan” is not a locally existing country… and this is it´s history: after the black death in a south hungarian valley a group of females from a ludbeckian village encountered a group of aesthetes, scholars and holy men, who were recently cast out of egypt for their eccentric religious beliefs. within a few years quite some children were born.
n.b.´s fantasieland “capolan” ist kein lokal existierendes land… seine geschichte hat sich so zugetragen: nachdem die pest europas bevölkerung massiv dezimiert hatte und viele landstriche geplündert waren, trafen 1348 in einem großen tal im süden ungarns zwei umherschweifende gruppen aufeinander: vorwiegend frauen eines lübecker dorfes und – kurz zuvor aus ägypten wegen ihres excentrischen glaubens vertriebene – ästheten, gelehrte und heilige männer. ein ungewöhnliches band formte sich zwischen diesen beiden gruppen und da nur wenige der hl. männer zölibatär lebten, gab es bald etliche nachkommen.
around 1380 they took flight from plunderers and searched for another sanctuary. meanwhile they called themselves capolanians (mike capolan was the holy man who had survived longest). they were vagabonds around the earth from now on, not searching for a new country, but for wisdom. if you want to get more details, please look for the booklet – i´m sure you can get it second hand and its postcards with n.b.´s art are also worth it!
das ging gut bis etwa 1380, als arbeitslose mährische söldner als plünderer ins tal einfielen. die capolanier (so nannten sie sich mittlerweile – nach mike capolan, dem am längsten überlebenden und charismatischsten der heiligen männer) flohen und suchten nach einer neuen zufluchtstätte. von da an vagabundierten sie auf der ganzen welt umher, nicht auf der suche nach neuem land, sondern nach weisheit. sie respektierten die neuen (vorübergehenden) siedlungsgebiete, betrachteten sie aber nicht als ihr eigentum. auf eseln oder pferden, in wägen oder zu fuß überquerten sie die landmassen asiens und europas ohne jemanden zu belästigen oder zu bedrohen.
wer weitere details möchte, besorgt sich das booklet am besten selbst – ich kann hier nicht alles übersetzen. ein paar stichpunkte noch: bzgl ihrer religion - “höchst unorganisiert”, “die seele des universums braucht keine beweihräucherung, jedes individuum muss seinen weg selbst finden abseits von selbstsucht und bosheit”, dogmen gelten als ungesund… bzgl wohlstand und besitz – wer mehr hat als er braucht, teilt es mit den bedürftigen; sich zu engagieren erübrigt steuern… bzgl. verstorbener angehöriger – da sie niemanden zurücklassen wollen, verbrennen sie ihre toten und verstreuen ihre asche im wind… komplizierte schrift und sprache… außerdem zeichnet sie eine tiefe verbundenheit mit musik und tieren aus.
