another vanitas-symbol was the opium poppy: as a barbiturate it brings sleep, which is sometimes called “death´s brother” and which refers also to one of the deadly sins – sloth.

empty snail-shells or scallops are the left-overs of former living creatures. so they symbolize death and fugaciousness. besides they move slowly and this sluggishness refers to the deadly sin of sloth. and being hermaphrodites they even symbolize another deadly sin: lust.

(örks, als biologin krieg ich ja bauchweh… schnecken als kriechtiere zu bezeichnen – unter kriechtiere versteht man reptilien… wenn sie wenigstens “kriechende tiere” geschrieben hätten…)

bis vor wenigen jahren galt die calla als typische “totenblume”. die farbe weiß steht für reinheit, unschuld und jungfräulichkeit.
sie wird schon seit den tagen der römer als festliche blume betrachtet. sie wurde mit dem licht assoziiert, wohl vermutlich weil sie auch in der dunklen jahreszeit reichlich blühte.
andererseits ist die phallische symbolik des blütenstempels nicht zu übersehen – deshalb steht die calla auch für hochzeiten und wiedergeburt/auferstehung. auf letztere deutet auch die trompetenartige blütenform hin, die an den jüngsten tag erinnern soll.

i had some playtime this morning and halloween is approaching fast. so what did i do? pumpkinize my portrait;))
i like it, i think i look younger on the pumpkin than in reality;) – though the photo is only few months old, hehe. the orange gives good light;))

sonntag morgens spiel ich mich mal gerne… und da halloween ja quasi schon vor der tür steht, wollte ich mal meinen persönlichen kürbiskopf haben…
ich finde, er kommt ganz gut raus, ich schau jünger aus als in echt *g*, obwohl das foto relativ neu ist. gutes licht halt;))
