VANITAS (lat. „leerer schein, nichtigkeit, eitelkeit“) bezeichnet die jüd.-chrl. vorstellung von der vergänglichkeit alles irdischen.
vanitas-motive zeigen, dass der mensch das leben nicht in der gewalt hat.

in der kunst sind viele vanitas-symbole gebräuchlich, die von plakativ bis sehr sublim eingesetzt werden (den zeitgenössischen betrachtern waren diese durchaus geläufig).
das häufigste vanitas-symbol ist der schädel, der am deutlichsten die vergänglichkeit unserer existenz versinnbildlicht. — spiegel, schmuck und kosmetik stehen für schönheit, weibliche anziehungskraft, aber auch für ihre vergänglichkeit, eitelkeit, selbstverliebtheit und die todsünde des hochmuts.
auf dem stempel, den ich hier auf den 4 vellum-stücken verwendet habe, sieht man ein bekanntes vanitas(vexier)bild: die junge frau am schminktisch blickt in den spiegel, die ganze komposition kann auch als totenkopf gesehen werden.

in the arts many symbols are used, from striking to sublime (the contemporary people knew their meanings).
the most common used vanitas symbol is the skull, which is a reminder of the certainty of death. — the mirror and cosmetics express female attraction, but also her fugaciousness, vanity and pride.
the stamp-image i used on the vellum-scraps shows a famous vanitas picture puzzle: a young woman at the make-up table looking into the mirror – the composition can also be seen as a skull.

another spread in the “memento mori” book. the triangle pocket in the middle between the two pages is open at the upper edge to hold the tag you see at the right. it translates something like: “inmidst of life we are captured/surrounded by death”.
often the symbols of skulls and roses are used together to show this connection (f.e. it is an integral part of the pictures of the grateful dead band).

eine weitere doppelseite im “memento mori”-buch. die dreieckige tasche in der mitte ist an der oberen schräge offen als behälter für das tag, das rechts zu sehen ist.
diese untrennbare verbindung von tod und leben wird oft ausgedrückt in der verknüpfung der symbole rose + schädel. (ganz besonders häufig zu finden auch in der bildsymbolik der band grateful dead.)

dieses buch wird sich auf diese themen konzentrieren: memento mori – vanitas – ars moriendi – danse macabre.
v.a. im mittelalter und in der barockzeit waren das auch in der kunst immer wiederkehrende themen. der tod war ein vertrauter des alltags. wobei damals noch ziemlich eindeutig feststand: der tod bedeutet einen übergang in eine andere welt – die von der kirche aufgezeigt wurde. (und das konnte auch die hölle sein – deswegen der teufelskopf re unten;)

especially in the middle ages and the baroque era death was a theme that often came up in all kinds of art. death was a confidant of everyday life. whereas one thing was clear: death was only the portal to another world – the world shown up by the church. (and that could be hell also – that´s why i stamped the devil´s head at the right bottom;)
